Recently I was invited to take part in a beta testing of Betegy, a system which aims to predict the weekend’s football outcomes. It uses a unique algorithm to predict not only the winner of the game, but likely scores as well. How does it do this? Well, here’s what the makers say.
“Our Algorithm uses a more broader model to analyse statistical patterns from each league and tweak them accordingly (e.g. How the presence or absence of certain players may affect a team’s performance, or in the Spanish la liga more goals are scored in comparison to the Italian Seria A, and also other factors like weather, birthday of player, coach etc.).”
It’s certainly a good system - rather than just looking at past results and form, the algorithm takes into account factors which the casual punter certainly wouldn’t have time to consider. And as a predictor, it works really well. I’ve been using it for a few weeks now and it’s managed to get a lot of the results and scores right, especially with regards to draws and upsets for smaller teams facing relative league giants.
Each week they put up free predictions for everyone to see and to test the water with whether they’re right, a “try before you buy” situation. So if you’re interested in some help with predicting the weekend results then give Betegy a go - it’s a subscription service but the rewards certainly outweigh the cost!
We really should stop meeting like this… One week after the return of Gylfi Sigurdsson to the Madejski Stadium, it’s now time for Royals fans to be reunited with another recent Reading legend. Shane Long may have carried the tag of “super-sub” for three seasons but after the departure of Kitson, Doyle and Lita, he finally stepped out of the shadows and made his name, firing Reading to a play-off final (and we all know what happened there). His goalscoring record saw him rewarded with a move to West Bromwich Albion, where the Reading faithful will travel on Saturday afternoon. Without further ado, here’s a look back at Shane’s career highlights for the Royals, complete with videos to relive those golden moments.
